coming off the debate and the pew poll you now can make the case that mitt romney is the guy who is kind of the energy and enthusiasm candidate. i think some polls will come out in places like ohio, virginia, north carolina, florida, hopefully some independent polls in the next few days that i think will get the measure of how much bounce mitt romney got. if those polls suggest him really closing the margin in those states then i think the romney campaign is really on to something. national polling is great and they're happy to have it, but really the problem they have had in the last six weeks, two months, is electoral vote in the swing states. they need those numbers to move. >> and we are going to have our nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist polls in florida, ohio, and virginia coming out first thing thursday morning. mark you're in chicago, which tells me you've probably been doing a lot of reporting. what are they saying at the obama headquarters? >> well, andrea, i came straight here from the headquarters where i sat down with some of the top officials on the campaign and talked

psychologically the debate gave team romney aa big boost right before the debate. on october 2nd the day before everyone was writing do you write off ohio? do republicans start to move their money to senate and house contests? that very good debate performance by romney changed that conversation at the very least where we're not talking about this being a run-away race for obama, this being actually a very, very close race again. >> mark murray, thank you very much. greatly appreciate it. coming up, love, marriage and fists flying. we'll get the latest on this unbelievable wedding brawl that broke out in the city of brotherly love. one person even suffered aa heart attack and died. >>> plus, our "news nation" gut check, do you think mitt romney will see a bump in new battleground polls this week? first is-there's a lot going on today. pbs will air a two-hour documentary tomorrow night profiling president obama and governor romney titled "the choice 2012." it focuses on key turning points in both candidates' political careers such as mitt romney's disastrous perform

but the real debate last night was between mitt romney and mitt romney. and being so contradictory, mr. romney opened a huge line of attack for the president. not just for 90 minutes, but for the 33 days until this election. and today in a blistering speech, the president took full advantage of the opportunity that romney's dishonest performance invited. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney. because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy, the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. the real mitt romney said we don't need any more teachers in our classrooms. but don't boo, vote. but the fellow on stage last night, he loves teachers. can't get enough of them. the mitt romney we all know invested in companies that were called pioneers of outsourcing jobs to other countries. but the guy on stage last night, he said that he doesn't even know that t

president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that information? how do you think president obama should then prepare for the second debate? should he just do exactly what he did this past wednesday night, except keep a closer eye out for the cheating because that is the only reason he lost? i mean, it may be comforting to tell yourself this is what really went wrong here but that is not really what went wrong here and making the case that it was does not help your candidate. the worst example of this though, the invention of a comforting new parallel reality that does not mean you have to face hard truths. the worst new instance of this is how the right today responded to the new jobs numbers. today the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%. it didn't drop for any of

now that it romney's post debate bounce is fading, we'll probably hear it again. the latest poll shows obama's lead widening to 5 points again. the president was shoring up the vote. he dedicated a moment to cesar chavez. >> where there had once been despair, cesar gave workers a reason to hope. it's people. more than higher wages or better working conditions. that was cesar's gift to us. a reminder that we are all god's children. >> president obama dedicating a monument to cesar chavez. let's bring in ari melber. great to have you with us tonight. president obama is not taking his lead or his strength from the hispanic community. he wants more. playing to his base, how smart a strategy is it? >> i think it's smart and i think what the president has to do right now is get out there and get into the fight. i think people want to see him talking to voters, talking about the unemployment numbers, which as you pointed out, are improving. still tough out there, but the best in four years. and i think that's the thing about the debates. they happen, but on the ground, t
